SI KILLER IN DISAPPOINTMENT

Diabetes is one of the deadliest diseases in the world. If left unchecked, this disease can cause complications that can slowly attack important organs in the human body such as eyes (blindness), brain (stroke), to heart failure and kidney failure.

Unfortunately, many diabetics are just aware of their illness when complications occur.

According to the results of research from the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) in 2015, there were 415 million people worldwide suffering from diabetes, and around 10 million were in Indonesia. The number of diabetics in Indonesia is expected to continue to increase until 2040.

Based on data from the Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) in 2013, the prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) was around 6.9 percent. Previously, in Riskesdas 2007 there were only 5.7 percent.

"Only 30 percent were diagnosed," said Dyah Erti Mustikawati, Head of the Directorate of Diabetes Mellitus Control and Metabolic Diseases of the Ministry of Health as quoted by Kompas Daily, 04/04/2015.

Of course, to find out if we have diabetes or not need to do regular blood sugar checks. More diabetes initially does not cause any symptoms.

"The new patient arrived when he was sluggish, ate a lot, drank a lot, drank a lot, the wound did not heal. If there are symptoms after just checking, it's late. It's already sugar," said diabetes expert Prof. Dr. Sidarta Soegondo, SpPd-KEMD
